Album Art design for Kenny Sain Brown (KSB).....artist unknown, would you consider buying? |
Published by dear artiste
These days of digital music release, where artistes and wannabes peddle “Online Singles” all over social media, one major constant in all these chaos is the music cover art. The cover art is created not only to differentiate one release from another, but is used to sum up the musical work it represents through text and image.
A good cover art has the ability to distinctly convey the essence of the music it packages, while a bad cover convey meanings that are less than desirable, more often than not, creating a bad impression of the underlying music.
Sad because most artistes probably spend a good deal of time trying to record that “Hit Banger” but forgot that the cover art is part of the entire package. Your cover art should represent what your music is about.
Think like a marketer. Your music is your product. No matter how much you’ve immersed yourself in your craft, if you’ve got an ugly product, it’s not going to sell. So what do you do? You package it well!
So does bad artwork equate bad music? You shouldn’t judge a book by its cover but in the case of music I’ll have to say it’s very likely that if your cover art is wack, then the music will most likely be wack.
Of course, this raises the question of what elements make a good album cover and what elements do not, which comes down to a question of taste based on personal experience.
I will classify cover arts into three categories:
• Good Covers: Artwork that install grabs one’s attention and makes one want to actively listen to the song. Provides immense hope that the music will be quite good.
• Average Covers: Artwork that has some design merits but isn’t terribly exciting nor offensive. The music could be good or bad, but listening to the song is akin to spinning a roulette wheel. Lucky we like to gamble with our music.
• Terrible Covers: Artwork that breaks all the principles of design and causes an uneasy feeling at first glance. Doesn’t make anyone want to listen to the song even if paid because we’ve learnt that bad design equals bad music.
I said all that to say this: If you’re an upcoming indie artiste reading this, and some of your artwork has been below standard, you are forgiven. And after reading this article, it is expected that you put what you have learnt to good use.
However, for an already established artiste like KSB, who is signed under a label, there is absolutely no excuse to subject the entire industry to this monstrosity.
I have faith that we won’t have to put any of KSB’s works as a bad example after this article. Hopefully, she would have learnt from this horrible mistake!
